World Communion Sunday

Good Monday morning everyone.  I wanted to make a post about World Communion Sunday last night after my family and I returned from the service, but I was tired and knew I needed to get up early today for work.  Let me give a brief, very brief, background of World Communion Sunday for those of you who may not know what it is. World Communion Sunday is celebrated the 1st Sunday in October by churches around the world, regardless of the denomination, to commemorate and reflect on the meaning of communion and significance of Jesus' last meal with His disciples before paying the ultimate price for us and our sins.  For "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans5:8 TNIV).

In the Brethren denomination, which is my denomination, we do not celebrate communion every Sunday like some other Denominations do.  This is usually saved for certain Sunday's of significance, weddings, and or other special events.  In our church we celebrate World Communion Sunday with the Love Feast Meal in the evening.  In the Church of the Brethren the Love Feast takes place twice a year, once on Holy Thursday and once on World Communion Sunday.  I have been a member of the Church of the Brethren since 2006 but this year was the first year that I attended the Love Feast meals.  For me the Holy Thursday Love Feast was so powerful and emotional that I could not believe what I had missed out on all of these years.  In the Brethren church the basic parts of the Love Feast are a feet washing service, the meal, and the sharing of the bread and the cup.  Depending on the specific church the feet washing could take place before or after the meal.  We did ours after the meal as in John 13:4-5 it states, "so He got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist.  After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His diciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him."  Truly it is very powerful yet humbling to be on your knees washing the feet of a brother and knowing that 2000 years ago the Savior of the world, God's Son, did the same for His friends.

I think overall the neatest part about last night's service was the fact that the day was specifically set aside to observe the Bread and the Cup not only in our denomination but many denominations worldwide.  It is just a powerful testament to the works, sacrifice, and service of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  I must wrap it up now and go get ready for work.  Thank you for taking the time to stop by, read, and share in what World Communion Day meant for me.  Have a good day, and God Bless!
